MUSTANG / WILD HORSE PHOTOGRAPHY IN WYOMING & MONTANA
Located in Northwest Wyoming is the McCullough Peaks, a dry and forbidding badlands desert area. An official BLM Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA) is located in these peaks east of Yellowstone National Park and near Cody and Powell. The HMA area runs for 15 miles, and the topography varies from flat sagebrush and grass land to rolling hills which flow into steep drainages, colorful mountains, cliffs and highly eroded canyons with local formations of fluvial Willwood. The wild horse herds have a diversity of coat colors (bay, chestnut, white, brown, black, sorrel, buckskin, gray, palomino, and red, blue and strawberry roans) and patterns such as piebald and skewbald are found in the McCullough Peaks bands of mustangs.
In the Pryor Mountains of southern Montana and extending into northern Wyoming near Lovell is the Pryor Mountain Wild horse Herd with Colonial Spanish American heritage.
All of these mustangs are allowed free range within their managed areas. Their spirits are unbroken, their hearts are big, and their lives are difficult and free. Enjoy these beautiful creatures.
